PROJECT: QUEERLIT 2008
FAQS

Do I need to register the copyright on my manuscript before I submit it?
No. Manuscripts do not need to be registered for copyright in order to be submitted for Project: QueerLit. While registration can't prevent someone from plagiarizing your work, it can provide you with certain legal advantages in the event there's ever a dispute, so registering your novel or any work is an option that many decide is best even if it is not being published. The U.S. Copyright Office contains more information on the process. The winning (best-rated) manuscript will be contracted for publication and registered for copyright by Suspect Thoughts Press.

Is there a word or page requirement for my manuscript?
All submitted manuscripts must have a word count of over 45,000 to qualify.

Can I submit as many manuscripts as I want?
No. Only one manuscript per author can be submitted for the contest (this is per author, not pseudonym).

I submitted my manuscript to the first Project: QueerLit contest but didn't win. Can I submit it again?
No. If your manuscript was included in the first contest it's not eligible. However, authors from the first contest are allowed to submit different manuscripts.

My novel has already been published as an e-book. Does this qualify as published? (Or: I've published other novels as e-books. Does this make me a "published novelist"?
Yes. We consider e-publishing a form of published. If you've previously published a novel in that form, you are ineligible to participate.

I self-published my novel. Does this qualify as published? Does this make me a "published novelist"?
Yes. We consider self-publishing a form of published. If you've previously published a novel in that form, you are ineligible to participate. If your novel has been assigned an ISBN for any book form we consider it published (except for cancelled publications).

How should I format my manuscript for submission?
The manuscript must be sized 8.5x11 with 1-inch margins. The manuscript must start with a page containing the title only, and each page should be numbered at the bottom. There should be no author name or identifying marks anywhere within the manuscript. Use a standard (serif preferred ) font such as Times New Roman, double line spaced and sized at 12 pt.

The manuscript must be submitted only in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format and only through the website in the manner described on the website. Do not send hard copies via mail, fax, or any other means--they will not be accepted. Adobe Acrobat files must use the novel title as the document name and end with the standard Adobe Acrobat file extension, "novel_title.pdf". (If the title is Project: QueerLit, the document name will be project_queerlit.pdf.)

How do I convert my manuscript into PDF format?
All manuscripts must be submitted in PDF format. The easiest way to create a PDF is to go to https://createpdf.adobe.com for a service that Adobe provides to the public. Go to the site, sign-up for a free trial login, and upload your manuscript. They will convert your file to a PDF, and send it back to you. As of this writing, you can use the Create Adobe PDF Online service for free five times. There are restrictions on the type and size of file that the Create Adobe PDF Online service will convert, so be sure to read the File Types section on their introduction page.

How do I submit my manuscript?
The contest is open for submissions between September 1, 2007 and December 31, 2007. Once you have a PDF file of your manuscript, go to the Submit page and fill out the form. From there you will also be able to attach your manuscript PDF. The entire process (form and PDF upload) must be done during the same website visit.

My computer sucks. I’m worried that I won't be able to properly convert my manuscript to PDF. Can't I just submit a Word document?
No. Project: QueerLit will not accept any manuscripts that are not in PDF format. It’s crucial to use a standard format so that all reviews are completely fair. If your computer sucks, go over to your friend's house and use theirs, or find an alternative resource.

What is the deadline for submitting my manuscript?
December 31, 2007, 11:59 (PST). Please refer to the Timeline page.

Will it cost me money to submit my manuscript?
No. There is no submission fee for the Project: QueerLit contest.

If I can't finish my manuscript in time, can I submit a partial one?
No. We will not accept anything but a full draft of a novel.

You haven’t answered my question. Who do I write?
Email the coordinators through the Contact page.
